What we record about your visit

Specifically, and in full. If something is not on this page, we are not doing it.

Two different things are described here. When you do something on SkillUp — finish a mission, pass a Verification — we record that it happened, because the product cannot work otherwise. Separately, we can record that you looked at a page, which nothing needs and which exists only so we can tell which pages are worth having. Only the second is something you switch off.

What is stored

That a page was opened
The path you opened, your language, and the time. Not what you typed, not what you scrolled past, not how long you stayed.
Kept as a record of the visit.
A tab-scoped identifier
A random value so that opening three pages is counted as one person rather than three. It is stored in your browser tab, not in a cookie.
Gone when you close the tab.
A referral code, if you followed somebody’s link
The cookie is called skillup_ref and it holds one code. It is how we credit the person who invited you when you register. No script on the page can read it.
Up to a year, or until you register — whichever comes first.
Which site sent you
The host only — google.com, facebook.com — never the full address. A full address can carry somebody else’s search terms or a token from another site.
Kept with the visit.
Which channel found you
Whether you arrived from a search, a shared link, a social app or directly. Recorded once as what found you and once as what brought you back most recently.
Kept with the visit.
Which version of a page you saw
When we are testing two versions of something, which one you were shown. The answer is worked out from your identifier rather than stored as a choice, so it is the same every time.
Kept while the test runs.

What we do not do

Each of these is something the code prevents rather than something we have decided not to do.

  • We do not fingerprint your device. No screen size, no fonts, no hardware, no canvas — the code that decides where you came from has nowhere to put any of it.
  • We do not load third-party analytics. Nothing on these pages reports to anybody but us.
  • We do not have advertising pixels or remarketing tags.
  • We do not sell or share this with anybody.
  • We do not store the full address of the page that sent you. It is reduced to a host before anything is written down.
  • We do not accept extra data from your browser. The page can tell us which path was opened and nothing else; everything stored alongside it is built on our side.
  • We do not give an anonymous visitor an identifier that survives the tab. There is no way to connect today’s visit to last week’s.

Your control

Turning page measurement off

If you have an account, this is off until you turn it on. It is in your settings, under privacy. We do not ask you again and we do not assume an answer.

If you are not signed in, we record the page you opened with an identifier that lives in that browser tab and is gone when you close it. There is nothing in it that could later be attached to you.

Turning it off stops page measurement. It does not stop the records of what you actually did on SkillUp — those are part of the service and are covered by the terms you agreed to.
